Occasionally we get the opportunity to express ourselves by corralling a lifetime’s collection of influences into a personal project. One such opportunity arose recently when challenged with that old chestnut, the blank canvas. Or in this case, blank windows. Facing a large 4 x 3 grid of windows in our SOMA office, the area resembled a horizontal comic book page with panels just waiting to be filled. And fill them we did, with a collection we’ve dubbed “Street Kooks”. Combining influences from custom car building legend Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and the good citizens of South of Market, the Kooks are about to go global via Shop-Pop.com.
Beginning with caricature sketches, some neighborhood research photographs we had squirreled away and an appreciation of vintage typography, we got to work bringing the kooks to life. Artists, mechanics, musicians and the occasional monkey entered the collective Popgun right brain, intersected with our influences and emerged onto our windows via some deft vinyl cutting!
